Instruments and Amplification

Breedlove Guitar Company — “We believe that the building of stringed instruments from wood is the absolute highest form of woodworking.”

Engelhardt-Link Musical Instruments – continuing the legacy of the renowned Kay upright basses.

Fender Jazz Basses — If it’s good enough for Geddy, it’s good enough for me. I prefer them cheap and mexican…just like my radios.

Fretwell Bass & Acoustic Instruments – If you want an upright bass, go see Jerry and Mary Jane Fretwell. They have some great guitars, banjos, mandos and violins as well. Located on West Beverley Street in the heart of downtown Staunton, VA.

Gibson Acoustic Instruments — The venerable old grandfather of the musical world is still providing quality instruments and impressive customer service. Their line of master model instruments dating back to the 19th century are the standard against which others are measured. “The cornerstone of legendary sound.”

Guild Guitars – Guild is renowned for superb tone and playability on their “made to be played” guitars.

Taylor Guitars — Surpassing the most discriminating musical requirements since 1974.

Trace Elliot Amplification — World class acoustic amplication.

Weber Mandolins — Handmade mandolins by Bruce Weber and company in Montana. A former luthier for the Gibson/Flatiron company, Weber has built instruments for the likes of Bill Monroe, Chris Thile, Butch Baldassari, and Bobby Osborne. Oh, and Jeff Bennett.

Universal Electronic Repairs — When our stuff breaks, this is one of the places we look to to fix it. Owner Roger Pinto used to be a tech for Marshall and once repaired one of Eddie Van Halen’s guitars. Fortunately for us, he knows his way around less expensive equipment as well!

Zoom Recording — When you can’t bring yourself to a JCS show, we bring the music to you. The Sheriffs began using Zoom recording interface products in 2009 and we highly recommend them.

Bands we like

6 Day Bender — Up and comers on the Charlottesville music scene. They’ve spent a lot of time on “repeat” on my Ipod lately.

Hair of the Dog — A talented Irish-American band out of New York. Check them out if Irish pub music is your thing.

Old Crow Medicine Show — American stringband roots music with a punk rock attitude. A JCS favorite.
